South Africa’s Border Management Authority intercepted 4,763 people attempting to cross the country’s borders illegally during the 2026 Easter period. That represents a 24% decline from the 6,253 recorded during Easter 2025.
Why it matters: Border security is a politically charged issue ahead of the 2026 local government elections. The BMA figures give the government concrete numbers to point to, though critics note that interceptions measure enforcement effort rather than total crossings.
The numbers
Of the 4,763 intercepted, 3,170 were undocumented persons, 998 were classified as undesirables, and 595 were deemed inadmissible for reasons including fraudulent visas and invalid travel documents.
Arrests of smuggling facilitators rose 22% to 138, up from 113 during Easter 2025. Border guards also intercepted four vehicles being smuggled out of the country.
Enforcement methods
Commissioner Michael Masiapato attributed the decline to strengthened enforcement strategies. These include drone deployments along key crossing routes, destruction of illegal crossing infrastructure, and increased patrols along the Limpopo and Caledon rivers.
At ports of entry, officers seized 557 kg of cannabis and 48 kg of other narcotics at Jeppes Reef Border Post and OR Tambo International Airport.
Legitimate travel surged
The BMA processed more than 1.2 million legitimate travellers during the Easter period, a 21% increase over 2025. The busiest crossings were Beitbridge, Lebombo, and OR Tambo International Airport.
