Nhlakanipho “Nipho” Buthelezi, a 15-year-old Grade 9 learner at HTS Sasolburg, died on Friday after collapsing during a school rugby match. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Sasolburg Hospital.
Why it matters
The death of a teenager during a school sporting event raises questions about medical readiness at youth fixtures. The Classic Clash between HTS Sasolburg and Sasolburg High School has been an annual fixture for roughly 47 years.
What happened
Buthelezi, a scrumhalf, experienced severe breathing difficulties during an under-15 match at DP de Villiers Stadium during the 2026 Classic Clash. He was rushed to hospital but could not be saved.
His rugby coach, Thorne Swart, described Buthelezi as a determined learner who pushed himself in both academics and sport. Tributes have poured in from the school community.
Official response
Free State Education MEC Dr Mantlhake Maboya said the department was “devastated” by the incident and extended condolences to Buthelezi’s family and the school community. The department said it would provide counselling to affected learners, teachers and staff.
The cause of death has not been publicly confirmed. No formal investigation has been announced.
